A well designed system will provide approx. 60% of your annual hot water needs with the main benefit being in the months March to September. In this period there will be minimal need to use back up heating (oil, gas, electricity etc.) and on sunny days water temperatures of 50°C – 60° C would not be unusual. (35° – 42° is a comfortable showering range for most people). In periods of extended cloudy weather systems obviously won’t perform as well and that’s the reason solar storage cylinders are larger than the ones used for oil / gas systems, i.e hot water generated during the previous sunny day is available for use.

However, even in cloudy weather the system is still delivering energy as the solar heating coil is located at the very bottom of the cylinder. This means that water entering the cylinder at say 10° can still be heated to within 4 - 6° of the panel temperature.

A well designed and properly installed system will provide energy all year round, will be virtually maintenance free and have a design life of 30 years plus. The quantity of energy delivered by 1 square metre of solar collector in one year is approx. 530KwHrs so a typical 5m system would provide 2,650KwHrs of energy or the equivalent of 265L oil. This energy is free, non polluting, independent of political or economic events and is yours to harness.
